Uruguay scored three goals against South Africa in front of 51,000 spectators today. Diego Forlán, the player of the game, scored on a deflected 25-yard shot in the 24th minute and converted a penalty kick in the 80th to give Uruguay its first World Cup victory since a group game at the 1990 competition.

South Africa has never been past the group stage. It is the first time a World Cup host has failed to win either of its opening two matches.

Uruguay has four points from two games in Group A, with South Africa, France and Mexico all on one point. France and Mexico meet in their second game tomorrow.
